The Brandy of the Damned: Ireland’s Rock Odyssey, Vol. I

A collection of obscure and not-so-obscure rhythm ‘n’ blues and beat gems recorded by Irish groups in the period 1964-1967. Irish blues rock began simultaneously in Dublin with Bluesville and in Belfast with groups like Them, The Wheels and The Alleykatz. Hot on their heals were Dublin bands The Greenbeats, The ChessmenThe Stellas, The KingbeesThe Strangers and The Hootenannys, later The Creatures, each of whom would eventually move on from their R’n’B roots in the face of limited opportunities. Belfast offered groups like The Mad Lads, The People, Just Five and The Luvin’ Kind a vibrant club scene where they thrived for a short time, while The Belfast Gypsies found some success in continental Europe. Only a few of these bands had chart hits, but the records they made laid the foundations for decades of rock music in Ireland. There’ll hopefully be lots more volumes bringing the story up to the beginnings of the Irish rock music boom of the 1980s.
