Ditch Cassidy – Pisces Apple Lady / Hamburger Midnight

Patrick ‘Ditch’ Cassidy is regarded as one of the best blues singers Ireland has produced. He first found fame as frontman with R’n’B band The Kingbees, who followed success in their native Dublin with a lengthy stint on the German club circuit. They recorded one single – My Little Red Book / I’m A Kingbee – in 1966 for a local label. The gruelling schedule led the band to break up after their extended stay abroad, with two members going on to co-found the Irish supergroup Dreams. Ditch, meanwhile, joined three former members of The Creatures to form Ditch Cassidy & The News in early 1968, who also spent much of their existence touring Germany. The group played an important showcase for record label heads in London in March 1969, but it was ruined by an excess of pre-gig drugs and only served to damage their reputation. The News next evolved from their blues roots into the rock band Chillum. In December 1969 Ditch Cassidy and Frank Boylan were arrested by French authorities on drug charges and made newspaper headlines for the wrong reasons. The two were released after ten days of fairly brutal treatment, with their long hair forcibly shaved off, and Chillum soon broke up.

Cassidy was given another showcase for Decca Records in Dublin in November 1970, for which he was backed by local unknowns Thin Lizzy. Again, Cassidy performed badly, though the backing group impressed and were ultimately signed as result. Decca eventually signed Ditch too, with the promise of a full solo album to follow. However, only one single was ever issued – a version of Leon Russell’s Pisces Apple Lady backed by a cover of the Little Feat song Hamburger Midnight - which was released in 1971. Ditch briefly joined an Irish supergroup called Freak Show at around the same time, before returning to a solo career as Ditch Cassidy & Gypsy Rock. He never got a chance to record the full album his voice and reputation deserved, but he continues to perform around Dublin to this day.
